چکیده

A convective flow system is engendered when two liquid droplets, or a liquid droplet and a solid surface, are maintained at different temperatures. Such flows give rise to Marangoni forces which under proper conditions prevent droplet coalescence, cause fluid motion, and dewetting. We present a study of adsorbed and applied fluid movement on a solid surface driven by surface tension gradients created by thermal gradients. Flexible control over the silicone oil and 1,3,5-trinitrotoluene movement is accomplished with an array of individually controllable gold thin film thermal elements on a fused silica substrate surface. We thus demonstrate unlimited fluid movements in one dimension. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. [DOI: 10.1063/1.1812830]

Marangoni forces created by surface plasmon decay.

We present optical microfluidic manipulation of silicone oil and glycerol via surface tension driven forces sustained by surface plasmon deexcitation energy. The phonon energy associated with the decaying optically excited surface plasmons in a thin gold foil creates thermal gradients capable of actuating fluid flows. Spectral dependence of the plasmon decay length and control of optical beam c...

Microscale Marangoni actuation: all-optical and all-electrical methods.

We present experimental results from an all-optical microfluidic platform that may be complimented by a thin film all-electrical network. Using these configurations we have studied the microfluidic convective flow systems of silicone oil, glycerol, and 1,3,5-trinitrotoluene on open surfaces through the production of surface tension gradients derived from thermal gradients. We show that sufficie...

Virtual microfluidic traps, filters, channels and pumps using Marangoni flows

This paper describes how Marangoni flows of various forms can be generated in thin liquid films for the purposes of microfluidic manipulation. Several microfluidic components, including traps, channels, filters and pumps, for manipulating aqueous droplets suspended in a film of oil on blank, unpatterned substrates are demonstrated. These are ‘virtual’ devices because they have no physical struc...

Thermocapillary Manipulation of Microfluidic Droplets: Theory and Applications

It was recently demonstrated by our group that a focused laser beam could be used to produce a net force on a moving microfluidic drop. The aim of the paper is to establish a scaling law for this net force by a examining the closely related but simpler situation of a very thin stationary circular drop of fixed shape submitted to a thermocapillary (Marangoni) stress. This leads us to recall the ...

Marangoni effect visualized in two-dimensions Optical tweezers for gas bubbles

In the report we demonstrate how, using laser light, effectively trap gas bubbles and transport them through a liquid phase to a desired destination by shifting the laser beam position. The physics underlying the effect is complex but quite general as it comes from the limited to two-dimension, well-known, Marangoni effect. The experimental microscope-based system consists of a thin layer of li...
